The film drives a knife through the absurdity of Philippines society.

How does the precocious female director who grew up with the rapid development of the country apprehend her own identity?

This is a debut feature film by Li Fangfang, a Chinese female film director and a best seller novelist at the age of 16 years old.
The film takes place in China during the early 1990’s thru Beijing Olympics. The film depicts the story about the growth of a young girl, who lost her parents but makes a great effort at work and romance. Director Li Fangfang creates a film with sensibility of a new generation.

A divorced woman fails to get a new job and gets thrown out of the apartment and becomes a homeless. She begins to live in the woods with a man in a similar situation.
Eight times up literally means seven failures and then a success.

The film depicts a character, who continues to overcome hardship even if she fails many times, with beautiful visual portrayal.

The film draws the viewers to the chaotic world with black humor and shocking depiction.

ACACIA is the only Japanese film entry in the Competition section and will be a first film in six years for Director, Jinsei Tsuji.
Not only did Antonio Inoki show his strong sense of presence, but also the ensemble of cinematography, music, acting and directing in the film was wonderfully done.

Use of Green Power

Green Power

As an initiative launched since last year, the Tokyo International Film Festival, has been implementing environmental protection and social contribution activities through the film festival.

The use of Green Power is of one of its activities.

The range of Green Power use has been expanded even further this year and the electricity for the following venues will be powered solely by the Green Power.

・TOHO Cinemas Roppongi Hills (Screening Theater)
・Roppongi (Screening Room)
・Cinemart Roppongi Hills Arena (TIFFpark)
・Academy Hills 49 (Film Festival office as well as various seminar venues)

The total amount of power use is 77,000 kilowatt-hours.

To realize this project, we purchase the electrical power generated by the 3 types of natural energy sources, namely, the Wind Power, Solar Light and Biomass (Biological Resources).

Important Notice:Battle in Heaven will be shown with no English subtitles.

World Cinema section's Battle in Heaven will be shown with no English subtitles.

Please be informed that the Battle in Heaven, Spanish language film directed by Carlos Reygadas, scheduled for screening on Oct. 23rd (Fri) and 24th (Sat) will be shown without English subtitles due to unforeseen reason. The film will be shown with Japanese subtitles but the Q&A session with the guest, Carlos Reygadas, scheduled on Oct. 23rd (Fri) will be held in English.

We would like to make our most sincere apology for the inconvenience we may cause the English-speaking guests planning to visit the screening. We kindly ask you to be forewarned regarding to this matter.
