Winds of Asia-Middle East Programming Director : Kenji Ishizaka
The motto of Winds of Asia-Middle East section is "Wider! Deeper!"
From Korea and China in the east to Israel and Egypt in the west blowing fresh across the vast expanse.
Film Panorama of Asia-Middle East reaches out further afield, and showcases selected
new films by new talent and maestros, from different countries and genres.
In aim to dig deeper, 4 special programs have been aligned for the feature - Egypt
as a leading film country of the Middle East, Malaysia’s Yasmin Ahmad who sadly passed away in July,
Ann Hui, active female director and pioneer of the Hong Kong film industry along
with legendary film archives around the region.

Film Panorama of Asia-Middle East 20 of the latest high-profile works from 14 countries and regions in the huge Asian Continent will be screened. One of the films will be chosen for the Best Asian Film Award.

This segment features Egypt, the largest movie empire in the Middle East and Africa. Alexandria Tetralogyr, the autobiographical series that put master director Youssef Chahine on the world map will be screened in its entirety. Unfortunately, Youssef Chahine passed away in 2008. Other works by Egyptian artists inspired by Chahine will also be screened, and many Egyptian guests, including directors and actors, are expected to visit TIFF. This is a must-see event!
In Memory of Yasmin Ahmad Co-organizer: The Japan Foundation
The Malaysian director Yasmin Ahmad passed away suddenly on July 25, 2009, at the age of 51. Yasmin has been a very dear figure at TIFF, winning the Best Asian Film Award at the 18th TIFF with Sepet. In her memory, we will be screening Talentim, her last work. Ahmad was also renowned as a popular CM director, and we will be showing seven of her highly successful CMs. Members of Team Yasmin are expected to visit TIFF.

UDINE FAR EAST FILM FESTIVAL with Tim Youngs, Fukuoka City Public Library Director Ann Hui is a pioneer female director, not just for Hong Kong but the whole of Asia. Her duology, The Way We Are (first screened at the 21st TIFF) and her latest work, Night and Fog, will be screened. Seven precious television productions that preceded her film directing debut will also be screened for the first time.
Discovering Asian Cinema:
The Treasures of the Film Archives
This year we will be screening several hidden treasures of East Asian film history that have been dug out of the film archives. From the works of The Korean Monster director Kim Ki-young, whose retrospective at the 21st TIFF received wide acclaim, we will screening Hyoen-hae-tan Knows, which depicts the inhumanity of war. We will also screen The Aimless Bullet, directed by Yoo Hyun-mok, who passed away in June this year. Eitaro Hinatsu (Dr. Huyung)was introduced in the NHK documentary, "Shiru Raku/Hanryu Cinema Teiko no Kiseki" as a director who filmed in Korea, Japan, and Indonesia during World War II, and we will be showing his Between Heaven and Earth. Finally, from the works of Maxi Weiban, who took the Shanghai movie making scene by storm in the 1930s as a genius horror movie maker, we will screen Wailing in Hollow Valley.
